After trying several Latin programs which all seemed either too juvenile or too difficult, too "free-form" or only dull charts, we finally settled on the perfect medium--Latin in the Christian Trivium. This is not a text aimed at very young children; it is probably best for at least 10 and up. It combines the best of the literary-immersion method – an ongoing storyline, and lots of Bible reading, with the complete charts and other things necessary for learning Latin well, AND it is all well-organized and easy enough to use that I've been able to learn along with my children.
The few times I've gotten stuck, the terrific on-line help service at the home website has helped us tremendously.
Definite pluses of this program – strong organization. Focus on necessary memorization. Interesting storyline to read. Lots of practice and exercises. Audio CD for pronunciation. Ecclesiastical pronunciation used. Thorough and complete teacher helps in the teacher guide. Online help service. Friendly and committed customer service. Affordable, especially considering the excellent and professional quality of the materials.
Minuses – you will not want to start this with a 6 year old. If classical pronunciation is important to you, you may prefer another program. Heavy emphasis on Bible reading–works for my family but may bother some. That's all I can come up with. :-)
I've used this now for three years with two children from ages ten and up, and plan to stick with it through all my children.
