We originally purchased Streams of Civilization to go with Veritas Press History as a supplement. After trying several history curriculums I felt overwhelmed at all the "extra stuff" and memorization required.
After showing my husband a few different options we had he chose Streams of Civilization for our children to use. He chose this because he felt it covered more of history than most history curriculums for younger ages. We like that it presents both a Christian worldview and also the commonly taught evolutionist perspective. It has shown our kids how the Bible has shown true throughout history.
We use this with our 2nd and 4th grader. I believe it can be adapted for different grade levels. I simply read a section or sections of a chapter daily with the kids and we discuss it. At the beginning of each chapter are a list of projects of varying difficulty. We are always able to find something to suit our age/ability. A list of words and concepts are also included that can be used for vocabulary.
We have chosen not to use the teacher's manual that is optional. We simply find that using the book itself is satisfactory.
I would recommend this book for those that want a more complete view of history starting with creation (rather than one country at a time) from a Christian worldview without all the bells and whistles. I would also recommend it as a supplement to other history curriculums.
There are maps included. We especially like the occasional paragraphs with interesting tidbits or "extras" that stand out by being outlined in blue.

My son, Shawn, used Streams of Civilization beginning half way through 9th grade, and all through 10th grade. He picked up where he had left off in the Global Studies course in our local public high school. He liked it, and I thought it was good as a text, inexpensive and had some thought provoking activities.
I liked that they present History by comparing it to a Christian World View. The way it is laid out worked well for Shawn. You read the chapter, then there are choices of activities to do that will enhance the lesson, and make it more likely that they will remember what they have learned.
Compared to other programs we have used, I think it was among the best. I like to have my older children work as much on their own as possible, and this was one thing that made it very possible for Shawn to do independent work, pace himself to get through the book, and he liked it. What more could I want?
The cost of Streams of Civilization is not the lowest, but it is affordable.
It is easy to follow, and easy to use - putting almost no time constraints on the parent/teacher. This is a curriculum intended for high school, and in my opinion, it is a wonderful World History Program. I am looking forward to using it with my other kids.
