Each of the Genevieve Foster books takes the reader on a journey around the world during a specific time period. Books available are Augustus Caesar’s World, The World of Columbus and Sons, The World of Capt. John Smith, George Washington’s World, and Abraham Lincoln’s World.

The books are written as stories about a specific individual and what was happening in the known world during that person’s lifetime. Along the journey, readers are immersed in the culture, events and peoples of that era.

Although each book covers a different individual and a different time period, they are all similar in layout. Each book takes a historical person and gives information about his life and times and events around the world. The books include timelines, maps, diagrams and other simple pen and ink type drawings to help children visualize the time period. An index at the end of each book helps locate information on specific people or events from the time period being discussed.

The books are fairly sturdy paperback editions. If many children will be reading and handling them, covering the covers with clear contact will help them last longer. Each book (or the bundle) is a good value if you need a historical overview story format.

The books can be used with a variety of ages. On a daily basis, I would read a portion of the book to my kids, then let the older ones do research, write papers or do a project based on what we’d read. Periodically, we would visit the library or search the internet for additional information so we could study that era in more detail.

These books are helpful if you want an overview of a particular historical time period and also if you want to help children see that history is a story — not simply a boring list of names, dates and places. These books make a good starting point for studying the lives and times of Augustus Caesar, Columbus, John Smith, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. If you want more in depth information, it is necessary to supplement with additional resources.
