I've used the Blackline Maps of World History with my first graders over the past year, and so far we are very happy with them.
These maps differ from the typical blackline maps used in geography studies, because they depict various events in history, instead of modern day boundaries. Using these maps, you can discover where the temples were built in ancient Egypt and where the boundaries of Cyrus the Great's Persian Empire were, as well as follow along the path of Alexander the Great's incredible conquests. These maps would be a great tool for visual/spatial learners, as a map can really help history "click" with them, but a multi-sensory approach also helps almost anyone have a better understanding of what you are learning.
The maps are sold in three formats: You can get a printed book, a CD-ROM, or a download from the Knowledge Quest website. Based on our experience, I highly recommend the CD-ROM or downloadable versions, as they make it so easy to print out as many copies of any map as you need for your whole family. Although you can purchase the maps in four different sets based on the time period you are studying, I also highly recommend purchasing the complete collection for a discounted price over buying individually. The complete collection I purchased included two different versions of each map: one partially labeled to make it more age appropriate for younger students, and one completely blank to provide a challenge for older and more advanced students.
The Blackline Maps coordinate well with popular history resources such as Story of the World and the Usborne Internet Linked Encyclopedia of World History. We used the ancient history maps this year in our learning with SOTW, and I printed out all the maps at the beginning of the year, storing them in order in a three-ring binder. As we read through SOTW, we followed along on the appropriate map in our binder. Because I was using this with first graders, we sometimes just worked orally, and other times the children would color in the maps and label appropriate areas. Our approach seemed effective in helping them understand what they were reading about, especially with regards to battle tactics. Those details can quickly disintegrate into a meaningless blur if you try to process them all in your head. Another happy result is that my children can now identify the Nile River Delta on any map or globe they come across!
After using these maps for a year, I am well pleased and anticipate continuing to use them for years to come. Overall, a well worthwhile purchase!
