After completing The Mystery of History Volume 1, From Creation to Christ, I could hardly wait to get started with Volume 2, Resurrection to Renaissance. My students enjoyed the short lessons and engaging activities from Volume 1 and were anxious to get beyond the Ancients as we'd spent a couple of years there :)
We learned lessons about people/places not typically included in history, such as Masada, Al Andalus, Wu Zetian, St. Patrick, St. Valentine, and so many others. How exciting to see how G-d has used men and women to reveal Himself to mankind. Perhaps redundant, The Mystery of History is written from a Christian worldview which could be an issue for some folks.
As a teacher I particularly appreciated tests, reviews, lessons, activities, maps, and projects all in one volume at a very affordable price. Mapping activities brought the text alive as my students saw that there is a world beyond the borders of the United States. Connecting people with places helped them to remember. Creative activities are always a plus. One could also quite easily assign additional research and/or report writing for the industrious student. A reproducibles CD is also available for those who do not have direct access to a copier. Reviews help to keep the material fresh. The MOH has a high resale value. Audio CDs for Volume 2 are available for listening to history lessons on-the-go or for the busy homeschool mom. Even though supplemental reading, movies, etc. are available in the back of the book, it is not necessary to supplement. Such supplementation would be handy in a co-op situation.
The Mystery of History can be used independently by an older student and it works in a group setting with students of the same age or different ages. We used it with a 3rd grader, 5th grader, and 7th grader.

Having a desire to teach history chronologically from a Biblical perspective, I became frustrated as other products did not quite measure up. Review, quizzes, and tests required more precious time and planning on the part of the teacher. Then I discovered The Mystery of History. Affordable and simple to use, it was a treat for all.
The Mystery of History is a complete curriculum encompassing a timeline, geography and mapping skills, biographies, arts and crafts, Bible, notetaking skills, and more. I especially liked the quizzes and semester tests which caused us to pay close attention and actually use the notecards we made for each lesson. While the activities at the end of each lesson were fun, educational, and required minimal preparation, they also concreted the lesson in my students’ minds.
Volume 1 covers the Ancients from Creation to the birth of Christ. Not the typical study of Egypt, Greece, and Rome, but Sumer, Persia and even North America, the MOH looks at the entire world through people and places. Most of us studied world history for a year or so never realizing there was a world beyond our shores. This other world was full of fascinating people and breathtaking scenery. Did you know Daniel and Aesop, Ezekiel and Buddha lived with decades of each other? How did the ideas that were spread through migrating nomads and treasure-seeking merchants affect you and me?
Although lists of supplemental books, movies, and websites are located in the back of the book, it is not necessary to supplement. This one volume is sufficient for elementary and middle school students. Easily adaptable to co-ops, Mystery of History volumes 1 will give your student a solid foundation of history seeing G-d's hand in all things.

My then 6th grader (two years ago) was not a huge fan of History. His favorite subject, one he excelled at, was Math. So I got him and my 1st grader Mystery of History: Volume 1 and they both loved it! I would say it suits the older children better, but it's definitely usable for the smaller children, they learn from each other and enjoy taking the quizzes together and reading the lessons together. And they especially enjoyed doing the activities after each lesson.
We went on to use Volume 2 with just our son but my daughter looks forward to using these books again when she is older and I am done working with her on some American History. Ds has already told me, and I have ordered the brand new Volume 3 in this series. He loves History now and it's much thanks to these books! I highly recommend them!

We enjoyed reading Mystery of History aloud and that it went in chronological order. The drawback is trying to cover so much history allows for only a brief overview. Also, my children didn't retain what we read. My nine year old daughter had an especially hard time with this and found the quizzes frustrating to try to read and complete on her own. Oral tests produced better results, but still not enough retention. We are switching to a more in depth approach to history following our completion of Volume I.
